Grade II listing for ICA’s WWII Monument
The International Cotton Association has been informed by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport that their War Memorial is now listed at Grade II on the List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England.
The sculpture of an infantryman, by Francis Derwent Wood (1871-1926), was erected on a tall stone pedestal to the front of the colonnade of the Liverpool Cotton Exchange, fronting Old Hall Street. It was unveiled on 5 April 1922 by Field Marshal Earl Haig, and dedicated by the Bishop of Liverpool, Dr FJ Chavasse. The sculpture now stands on Exchange Flags, close to the Nelson Monument and every 11 November, the ICA host a Remembrance Service that all at Exchange Flags attend to pay their respects.
