LightNight is coming to Exchange Flags!
Friday 17 May 2019 sees the magic of LightNight return to Liverpool for its tenth annual festival.
On LightNight, the city springs to life for a Friday night out like no other. With new commissions and a packed programme of more than 100 events, the festival offers an unforgettable experience to be enjoyed with friends and family. Venues across the city will stay open late to present live music, workshops, theatre, exhibitions and much more.
For 2019 LightNight explores personal and collective rituals, from the spiritual to the habitual, and consider how they help us to understand the world and define, or transcend, our place within it.
We are honoured to be involved with the Ritual programme this year, and an impressive light and sound installation will be popping up in our square on the night, titled Halo.
From the makers of Illumaphonium, Michael Davis and Gemma Mills, Halo is a new participatory sonic and visual kinetic environment made up of digitally interlinked columns of ever-evolving patterns of light and sound. The visual configurations created by your touch are displayed directly upon the Halos, generated using cutting-edge physics simulations.
Festival guides are only £3 and can be purchased from selected outlets across the city centre or ordered online at www.lightnightliverpool.co.uk.
LightNight is produced by local social enterprise Open Culture.

Liverpool Biennial 2018
“Liverpool Biennial is the UK biennial of contemporary art. Taking place over 15 weeks across the city in public spaces, galleries, museums and online, Liverpool Biennial commissions artists from around the world to make and present work in the context of Liverpool. The 10th edition Beautiful world, where are you? invites artists and audiences to reflect on a world of social, political and economic turmoil with free exhibitions and events across the city.”
We are excited to have our own sculpture on the Exchange Flags square, Cenotaph, created by the talented Holly Hendry. The sculpture takes the form of ‘pipe’ sections made from Glass Reinforced Concrete (GRC) and reflects the artist’s interest in the city’s architecture, from the Williamson tunnels that were purportedly built for land reclamation, to the old dock buried under Liverpool ONE.
We welcome you all to view this unique exhibition on our square and those installed throughout the city.

We have some monster visitors making a stop at the Flags this August for Illyria’s open-air performance of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic, “The Lost World“!
Four intrepid explorers, led by the redoubtable Professor Challenger, travel to an uncharted plateau in South America following a few scant directions scribbled in a sketch book. They find flora and fauna beyond their wildest dreams, become involved in tribal warfare between Apemen and indigenous humans, and encounter terrifying dinosaurs previously believed to be extinct. But when their camera is destroyed in an accident what evidence can they produce to prove that these creatures actually exist? Unless, of course, they bring live specimens back to London to reveal to an astounded public… What could possibly go wrong?
Illyria has an unmatched reputation for innovation in the open-air touring theatre sector, where they are the first company to tackle a show in this genre and of this scope! You can expect prehistoric thrills, monster laughs and life-size dinosaurs abound in the must-see show of the summer!
